Bells of San Miguel
it seems your lover that we thought had died;
still wanders through the garden like a butterfly.
you watch his fluttering wings and you’re lost in a spell;
he’s another spirit of San Miguel.
the beggar sings the same song in the streets
down by El Pegaso where the gringos go to meet.
is this one reason why things never seem to change ?
her tambourine always rings the same old way.
it’s a place where time has stopped.
and all is remembered and nothing’s lost.
and no one dies who is not forgot;
you recognize him (them) still.
if you try I know you will,
each time you hear the bells of San Miguel.
the angels start to stir when the church bells ring.
the vendor selling papers begins to sing.
the cobblestones are smooth from centuries of wear.
the narrow streets like canyons in the desert air.
