The Buckman Mine Slide Show
Addendum about the Buckman Property:
Notes about Nora Buckman:
From Ancestry.com I obtained 3 census records from 1910, 1920, and 1930 in which Nora Buckman appears as a resident of Golden, Jefferson, CO.
• She was born about 1881 in Kansas (died in 1966).
• Her husband was Guy Buckman, born about 1879 (died in 1947).
• In 1910, there were 2 ‘stepchildren’ of Guy Buckman in the household: Samuel Horning (age 9) and Mary Horning
(age 8). Assuming for now that they were Nora’s from a previous marriage?
I still need to dig a little deeper to see if the mine, when established, was also known then as the Buckman property. She is listed as the owner of ‘the land’ in 1953 a few years after her husband, Guy, had passed. Both she and Guy are buried in the Golden cemetery, as is her son Samuel Horning and his wife (grave records posted by Scotti McCarthy).
The evidence so far seems to indicate that the Buckmans were in the area when the
mine was established in 1916. A little more work, hopefully, to confirm whether or not they were the original owners.
6/22/2014 Once again, using Ancestry.com, I was able to trace the Buckman family back further to Guy's father and mother, Fred H. Buckman (born in Hanover, Germany) and Thomasina E. Thomas, who were married at Arapaho City near Golden on 12 Oct 1872. Fred is mentioned in a history of Jefferson County as purchasing the west end of the Golden Gate Canyon toll road. In 1880, his residence was in Blackhawk, Colorado where he was listed as both a widower and butcher as his occcupation. He passed away 9/8/1914 and was buried in Golden.
