Ski Medley: 'A Little Bit Slower' and 'Father Dyer'
I’m shooting down a well packed trail
in a little place called Vail.
sometimes I think I could spread my wings and fly.
I’m building up momentum but
I swear it never fails,
opportunities keep drifting by;
so I’ll try
to point these boards together and
catch a different view,
and ski a little bit faster
‘cause I wanna take a run with you.
sometimes I’m not so graceful and
I catch an edge and fall.
if you get too far ahead
you might not hear me call.
gravity defines the path,
the sun shows us the way.
we might not get this chance another day;
so let’s play.
we’ll point these boards together and
catch a different view.
ski a little bit slower
‘cause I wanna take a run with you.
ski a little bit slower
ski a little bit slower
won’t you ski a little bit slower
‘cause I wanna take a run with you...
Part II: Father Dyer
Up in Breckenridge there are ghosts that have been around for about a hundred and twenty years. And on a quiet winter morning, if you squint your eyes just right, you can still see a miner and hear him say: “Hey! Look up on the ridge! I believe I see ole Father Dyer coming over the pass from Fairplay. He’s got the mail sack on his back and I bet he’s got his bible tucked up under his coat. too.”
“Oh well, I guess we’ll have to hear some preaching tonight.”
“Father Dyer! “ “Up on the ridge!”
Father Dyer was a preacher man
who crossed these hills on boards as long as trees.
and when he fell he didn’t have anyone
to pick him up or brush him off,
or nurse him when he had a cough
or bless him when he sneezed.
oh, Father Dyer
crossed the hills
long ago
on ten foot skis.
oh, Father Dyer
saw a light
that brought him right
down to his knees.
just as bright
as the winter snows
that would blind his eyes
and freeze his toes.
oh, Father Dyer
saw a light.
