Fort St. Vrain Slide Show
the Old Fort St. Vrain
In the first hours of dawn
A Bald Eagle sits on a post
Then catches a fish from the river
That I love the most
Since we moved to the plains
I can see out as far as
The Never Summer Range
The walls of adobe, have long ago melted away
Where Arapaho gathered to trade
At the old Fort St. Vrain
From the sand stone bluffs they could look out
And see the buffalo kick up a cloud
I still see them now.
Kit Carson and Fremont were there
charting regions unknown
Some Mexicans built up the walls
After traveling far from their home
In the shadow of hills there is still
A place in my heart
Where our children grew up long ago
And we made a new start
You can’t go back home they say
So we packed up and moved far away
To the old Fort St. Vrain.
